The concept of teaching and developing strategies is a process that begins with the examination of the individual characteristics of the students, focuses on the learning outcome, and incorporates technologies that enhance the learning and outcome of successful academic achievement. As Howard Garner recognizes students have various entry levels, different types of intelligences. In consequence, the learning strategies in a classroom have to be developed and adapted to the student audience. Additionally, it is important to evaluate the cognitive style of learning that are pointed out by Myers-Briggs - extrovert, introvert, sensing, intuitive, thinking, feeling, judging and perceiving. These factors are relevant for the teacher in order to explore resources and create lesson plans that accommodate the students of various intelligences and learning styles. Another factor to take into consideration when planning lessons, is the fact that student audience may be culturally diverse or have phyisical learning disabilities and this can be a major challenge for the teacher. Keeping this in mind, technology programs and devices can significantly assist in providing support to the learner and the teacher. The first challenge international students encounter is the language barrier. Often this is overcome through applications and technologies that foster critical thinking and creativity. Critical thinking and creativity engage the vocabulary learning and expansion and encourage advancing and integration.

In the ever evolving modern era of technology almost all aspects of our lives and working environments are dominated and influenced by technology. Pertaining to the educational sector, technology is applied to enhance, communicate, teach, prepare, assist, and support. Teachers and educators are required through certification and licensure to be knowledgable in technology and supportive applications. To refer to the statement of Abbey Roos, the Kindergarten teacher at Dr. John A. Langford Elementary School in Conneticut, educational "technology has the potential to reach students of all learning styles" (Teaching and Learning with Technology, 2018). However, it is not just teachers that are required to implement this know-how but also administrators, coaches, and supportive staff who impact education outside the classroom. Professional educators are familiarized and introduced to various technology systems that they can apply in their classrooms and implement in lesson planning. The challenge for administrative and supportive staff is to find opportunities that integrate them and keep them up to date in their professional development. The financial aspect of integrating new technolgogy into the school or classroom and the training of teachers, staff, and administrators is always a challenge. The economic resources are influenced by the culture and community the school represents. From a plaethora of educational technology equipment, tools, and applications that are offered on the market, it is relevant to choose technology that is optimal for the financial budget of the school and fits the teaching philosopies of the educators.
Assess your own technology skills and list three areas in which you could improve your abilities. How competent do you believe you are in order to teach in a technology-rich environment? What other opportunities would you search for to become even more proficient in the use of technology in the classroom? How would you go about improving in these areas? Assess your own technology skills and list three areas in which you could improve your abilities.
Hello!
My name is Mara and I am pursuing a graduate certificate in Instructional Technology and Design. I completed my BA in Foreign Languages at the University of Southern Mississippi in 2017 with a double Major in German and Spanish and a Minor in Forensic Science. I continued my educational path with a Certificate in Criminal Justice, followed by Instructional Technology and Design, which I will be graduating from this summer 2020. As an ESL (English as Second Language) Tutor at Oak Grove High School, I serve as an advocate for immigrant students and provide tutorial support in academic and linguistic areas. In my various administrative employments, I have applied several software skills such as Word, Power Point for presentations, Canva for personal designs, Concept Mapping for structured learning and web design, and Wix for professional development. Discussion boards, video conferences, and sharing data through Google Docs are additional skills that were acquired either through course requirements, work assigments, or professional conferences. Although I enjoy the close interaction and participation in lecture classes, I opted for an online degree due to my family commitments. Employed with two jobs, online classes give me the option to pursue my degree and advance in my professional development. Time management, dedication, and commitment are key components that are required from an online student. Online learning incorporates for me researching, reading articles, reports, books, and exploring "how-to" videos that visually navigate the viewer through a process. Since my Undergraduate career, I have taken several online classes which ranged from Chemistry, Leadership, Special Problems in Criminal Justice, Policing, and Instructional Technology. Electronic communication is vital in all professional sectors. Emails, chats and listserv are the examples that I use in my line of work. It aids in establishing relationships with educators, staff, and families and retrieving information or sharing resources, data and information. Furthermore, I use video chats, emails and data sharing to stay connected with family and friends overseas. In the classroom setting I am not applying a specific teaching philosophy. The students come from different backgrounds with different educational experience. Particularly, I assist on an individual level, and it is imperative to adapt to the students particular needs and mentor to achieve academic success. My goal is to influence high school students to discover their competencies and talents that can open opportunities and possibilities in their lives. |
